It’s the Friday Five, Y’all!

1. It's 17 days until Chrismas. How do you feel about that?

Hoping all of these extra performances go well, I haven’t really given much thought except that it coincides with mine and Z’s 23rd wedding anniversary. Meanwhile, I am trying to just keep swimming.

2. It's the second night of Hanukkah. How do you feel about that?

I feel sad, because it is supposed to be a Festival of Lights, and war has tarnished everything. I felt the same during Diwali, and we didn’t even light Divyas to celebrate.

3. It's Howie Hawkins's birthday. Have you wished him a happy birthday yet?

Happy Birthday! Don’t let Jill Stein be your party’s nominee next year. She marred what the Green Party stood for in 2016.

4. John Lennon died on this date in 1980. Your reaction?

I remember when they announced his death. I was very young, and I remember being very sad. Decades later, I recall how they played all of his solo works on the air. His image isn’t pristine to me anymore, knowing that he was not exactly an exemplary person. But no one is perfect, I guess.

5. Beethoven's 7th Symphony premiered in Vienna with Beethoven conducting, on this day in 1813. Can you hum any part of the 7th?

Here’s the question that inspired me to post.

This symphony has so many wonderful aspects to it. It’s rarely performed, but so often used in movies and shows. It even appears in ‘Fall of the House of Usher,’ and boy did Ludwig know the art of musical painting! I get drawn in every time I hear the second movement. It’s not my favorite symphony of his, but it’s definitely a masterpiece in its own right. Underrated to be sure.
