The Friday Five for 14 February 2025
These questions were originally suggested by

1) Do you like your birth-name? Why?
2) If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?
3) What names would you consider giving your children?
4) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?
5) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?

I've always loved names so I had a lot of fun with this one. Thanks!

Do you like your birth-name? Why?
I quite like my names although the first - which is not Sally by the way - is I think somewhat old-fashioned these days, but then so am I - and it was never hugely popular so not as obviously dated, and I do think it has a little dignity which is good because I need all the dignity I can scrape together.
If you could change your name to anything else, what would it be?
I wouldn't, because I would never remember a new one (I have enough fun with the two I have and my online names which are nearly all, well, Sally :) and most of the names I really really like are very unlike me as a person. If I needed a penname, say for writing or competitions, I'd probably use yet another variant of Sally.
3) What names would you consider giving your children?
I like old-fashioned names, when I join in one of those threads asking in, in the name forums I sometimes visit, my choices are always that way (so were many of the names I gave dolls as a child. And those I give characters.) On the other hand, one has to consider what sort of a child one is likely to have and while wildly romantic or historic ones may be beautiful, a child with my family genes.... ummm. No.
I usually say Michael John Terence for a boy - Michael has always been my favourite boy's name, and my dad was Terry - and Lorna or Leonie Catherine for a girl. But who knows... That's why imaginary people are so useful. My latest was a small girl called Maisie - no, I do not want to name a real child Maisie, but the imaginary one doesn't seem to mind.
4) If you had a band, what would you name it, and why?
Oooh, never thought about it, despite thinking up names for nearly everything else imaginable. Of course, it would depend somewhat on the style of music, and given me being me that would be riffing off folk/early or even medieval music so how about (consulting list of words and names I have always wanted to use) Trobairitz, which is a real if obsolete word for a female troubadour?
5) Is there a name that you completely hate? Why?
I don't know about hate, but I am definitely unfond of Doreen and Darlene and Marlene, don't know why, also Josephine and Deirdre and all too many double-barrelled ones, and I find Nevaeh too twee (no offence to anyone who likes these). And above all any and every 'kreatively' spelled name but that's a whole different ball game.
