The Friday Five for 27 March 2026

1. What is a common ear worm that you get?

2. How long do they last?

3. What do you do to get rid of them?

4. What is the worst ear worm you've ever had?

5. Do you get some guilty pleasure in passing the ear worm along?

my post is friends-locked.

Today's is an exercise of "tell me how old you are and where you grew up without telling me how old you are and where you grew up."

1. What is a common ear worm that you get?

If it's not just random selections from various playlists, it'll be either the Mii Plaza theme, the Pinball Number Count or specifically the Shop-Rite Can can sale variant of the Infernal Galop.

2. How long do they last?

A while. Multiple hours for sure.

3. What do you do to get rid of them?

if it's a song, listening to it for real generally unsticks the mental jukebox. Otherwise I just wait for them to go away.

4. What is the worst ear worm you've ever had?

My parents left the local news radio (1010WINS: Give us 22 minutes we'll give you THE WORLD) on somewhere in my house at all times growing up, so a fair number of my personal earworms are jingles from area supermarkets. The worst one by far was the one for Food Emporium for being extremely annoying and catchy at once. Thank god they don't exist anymore.

Second runner up would be the old Milford Plaza Hotel commercial.

5. Do you get some guilty pleasure in passing the ear worm along?

It's not guilty. It's fully admitted sadism. Hence all the youtube embeds.

I did not have to watch any of those YouTube links to get all of these references immediately in my head!
bookscorpion: This is Chelifer cancroides, a book scorpion. Not a real scorpion, but an arachnid called a pseudoscorpion for obvious reasons. (Default)

1 What is a common ear worm that you get?
{With apologies to anyone who gets stuck with any of 'em} There are so, so many... the obvious one is the Chicken Dance (which we always called the chicken song as kids but that is a completely different if equally annoying piece), Popcorn is also totally earwormy. Oh, and Tubthumping, the song about a mouse in a windmill (I only find myself one or two lines on repeat) and every damn theme of the William Tell Overture.

2 How long do they last?
Prettu much until I can totally distract myself (and other music doesn't do it, they just combine in a noxious cacophony in my head)

3 What do you do to get rid of them?
Like I said, distract myself with something else to concentrate on - really concentrate. It can take time, too... but the alternative is jst to go with it and annoy the dickens out of Sis or anyone else around by singing the damn thing over and over and over....

4 What is the worst ear worm you've ever had?
For me the absolute earwormiest is the 80s pop song Mexican Radio...

5 Do you get some guilty pleasure in passing the ear worm along?
Not to Sis, that's for sure - she can get eeeeeeeevil in return. And anyway, imagine if you were singing one and so badly (does anyone sing earworms well?) that no one recognised it... but embarrassing.
