The Friday Five for Yesterday: Vacation
Jun. 9th, 2018 03:34 pmForgive me for being late to post this -- I spent the last 48 hours getting ready for and then traveling to my vacation destination and did not have time to post until now.
1) Where did you go, and what did you do, on your last vacation trip?
2) How often do you take trips for pleasure?
3) How much vacation time do you take each year?
4) Are you satisfied/happy with the amount of time off you can take?
5) What would be your ideal or dream vacation if money and time were no object?

Date: 2018-06-10 09:59 am (UTC)1) Where did you go, and what did you do, on your last vacation trip? Went to visit a sister who lives in a small town on the coast... lovely and relaxing.
2) How often do you take trips for pleasure? Not a lot, couple of times a year now, and they're fairly short. Maybe in the future there'll be another overseas trip, but I'm not in a hurry.
3) How much vacation time do you take each year? I am lucky, I get five weeks paid leave a year (a perk of the job when I started, they've cut it since but those who started with it keep it). I am unlucky in that my specific position means it's very hard to take that amount without inconveniencing the rest of the office. I am lucky in that HR insist I keep my leave balance down to a specific number of days I can roll (and it's not "use it or lose it" it's "use it or we will MAKE you use it") and therefore when I take the leave and inconvenience the whole office, no one blames me.
4) Are you satisfied/happy with the amount of time off you can take? I'm saving a fair bit as I will retire in a few years, and that - with my long service leave - means I will be able to go on fully paid leave for quite a while and then formally retire :)
5) What would be your ideal or dream vacation if money and time were no object? Take several months to travel all around Europe/parts of Asia exploring all the old cemeteries, castles, cathedrals and old ruins/deserted places that are on my list... it's a long one.
While staying a 5 star hotels the whole way (I like my comfort, I do)

Date: 2018-06-11 05:09 pm (UTC)2) How often do you take trips for pleasure?
It really depends from year to year, but usually try and take a long weekend at least every season.
3) How much vacation time do you take each year?
Again, it kind of varies year to year...last year we went to Europe twice and did some long weekends in the US, so probably 6 weeks or so. This year, it will not be as much due to my husbands work load and the fact that we are doing and having some things done to our house.
4) Are you satisfied/happy with the amount of time off you can take?
Mostly. I love visiting new places, but there is also a bit of stress with the planning and sometimes with the trips themselves.
5) What would be your ideal or dream vacation if money and time were no object?
I would love to go to Egypt, Jordon, and Turkey (those are mostly security concerns.) India, China, Australia, and New Zealand would also be wonderful if we had 3 weeks to a month that we could go at one time.

Date: 2018-06-12 09:52 am (UTC)Last week I went to Perthshire, I stayed in Perth and explored there and Pitlochry especially around the dam but I didn't have time to fit in a distillery tour and tasting session because I had to (a) get back to Perth and (b) travel home to Aberdeen and my tickets for Aberdeen were for a specific time train. I had someone suggest Dunkeld on Twitter, sadly I didn't have the time to go there, hopefully I can do that another time I'm down that way.
2) How often do you take trips for pleasure?
As often as possible, as I consider days out to be pleasure trips and they can be a really cheap, good way of exploring somewhere new especially when you're a bit pushed for time. Mum used to take me all over West Yorkshire when I was little for days out so it's something that kind of stuck with me for some reason.
3) How much vacation time do you take each year?
My last job was 28 days and I'd break up my time off with short breaks over my very rare weekends off (weekend off are unheard with certain care companies) and my longer breaks were usually a week to 10 days depending on what I had planned.
4) Are you satisfied/happy with the amount of time off you can take?
With my last job not at all especially when they promised increased time off after a certain amount of years worked with them, it never happened and they also suspended me without pay for apparently been one day over the 28 days during the summer and I had to get the union involved to resolve that because they wouldn't take calls, reply to emails or acknowledge that they'd messed up by not telling me what time off I had left. I've since quit that job though.
5) What would be your ideal or dream vacation if money and time were no object?
There's a few things I'd be doing on a dream holiday - going to Australia during State of Origin to watch all three games as I've only ever seen it on telly and also some Sydney Roosters games too. I'd also take a few months to travel across Canada by train doing both east to west and west to east stopping off at different places along the way. At least a month in NYC because I've been twice and I love it. Of course exploring more of Scotland because I've lived her for nine years now and still don't feel like I've seen enough of the country even with the two years I was back and forth between Leeds and Aberdeen before I moved up in 2009.
