4. When you're reading someone else's journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?

Copy and paste to your own journal, then reply to this post with a link to your answers. If your journal is private or friends-only, you can post your full answers in the comments below.

If you'd like to suggest questions for a future Friday Five, then do so on DreamWidth or LiveJournal. Old sets that were used have been deleted, so we encourage you to suggest some more!

We repost the questions exactly as the original posters submitted them and request that all questions be checked for spelling and grammatical errors before they're submitted. Comments re: the spelling and grammatical nature of the questions are not necessary. Honestly, any hostile, rude, petty, or unnecessary comments need not be posted, either.**

1. Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal?
I try to but I don't always manage it.

2. What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal?
These days general life stuff gets more comments and fandom stuff now gets the least. Used to be the fandom stuff got tons of comments.

3. What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal?
Try to reply but I also check their profile out to see if we have friends in common, especially if it's on a public post because I rarely post publc.

4. When you're reading someone else's journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?
Not really, I tend to just comment and carry on reading the flist.

5. When is "too late" to reply to an entry?
No such thing as too late but anything longer than say six weeks and a reply isn't likely to happen.

1. Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal?

My natural inclination is always to reply even if I don't have much to say :) And in fact, most of the time I do reply, even if it's just a "yes, that's interesting" or "thank you" or "good point" etc, because it seems friendly.

If I really have nothing to add, especially if I'm a little annoyed but feel like they didn't say anything wrong, I try to not reply, and to assume the comment can stand ok on its own.

2. What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal?

The most responses are usually when a post is controversial, or goes on a tangent about some small-but-interesting point mentioned in passing :)

Nowadays, DW seems to get few comments at all, so many of my posts get no response. When comments were more usual, the ones that seemed to get few were when I posted diary-ish stuff that was mostly "what I did" without much "here's how I felt", and long posts where I tried to discuss some topic, but ended up rambly and didn't engage anyone.

3. What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal?

It's generally quite interesting! Nowadays, new commenters usually have something interesting to say, often it's "I saw your post on a friends' friend page" or "I saw your post on twitter or facebook" and then "I hope you don't mind me commenting, but I wanted to say..." and then usually something interesting about the topic.

I always make an effort to reply and be welcoming, and to say that comments like that are always welcome, and sometimes they stick around. If I got more vituperative comments, I'd be more zealous about screening comments from people.

4. When you're reading someone else's journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?

If there's a small to medium number of comments, I'm usually interested to read them. Although I've only slowly acquired the skill of thinking "I wanted to say this, but other people said it well already, so I don't need to say the same thing again" :)

If there's more comments, I try to skim to get a sense of the replies and search to see if anyone said the same thing I said, although I don't usually succeed perfectly.

5. When is "too late" to reply to an entry?

Never! That is, some conversations only make sense in real time. Comments saying "congratulations" or "I'm sorry, are you ok?" etc probably don't make sense retrospectively. But if you have something interesting to add, however small or minor, I welcome it even after decades :)

1. Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal? I try to. Sometimes I can't… but for the most part I think I get most of them :) Hard to think of a witty reply to a smiley (though I like getting them!) Also, on the occasion when one reader is replying to another, I may not answer the latter if it's clear I'm not needed to.

2. What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal? Questions about the sort of things that everyone can have an opinion on - words and language, customs of other countries, definitely food. Oh, and icon posts, even old ones.

3. What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal? Umm, reply or at least say thanks?

4. When you're reading someone else's journal, do you read every comment before adding your own? Depends on what I'm commenting on - sometimes it's a good idea if I suspect that I'm going to be repeating what most of the others have said, so I can find a different way to say "me seventhly!" or whatever.

5. When is "too late" to reply to an entry? Depends on the post - stories, icons, pics and music and happy thoughts… never. General my-life-and-welcome-to-it, probably the point where I can't even recall whatever it was I was talking about is a tad late, but I have no problem if someone does...

True! Hadn't thought of it that way, but you've put it well--topics that everyone can have an opinion on.

Fun to read your answers! M.

Fun questions!

1. Do you like to reply to every comment in your journal?
I try to!

2. What type of post gets the most/least responses in your journal?
I'm not sure. You folks really come out for vacation photos and get seem to get excited about electric teapots, tea, and general fandom talk. Hm. That's suspiciously similar to what I like chatting about.

3. What do you do when a new person first comments in your journal?
Comment back! And then check out theirs to see who they are and to cement their user name in my mind. As much as I love communicating in writing/comments, it's oddly hard for me to distinguish different people when I first get to know them, and I have a terrible memory for names. A few comments or conversations in, we're good.

4. When you're reading someone else's journal, do you read every comment before adding your own?
I do. Is that nosy? I love the conversational style of LJ/DW.

5. When is "too late" to reply to an entry?
When the author seems to have signed off LJ/DW. Otherwise, it's all fair game. Doesn't everyone like getting comments on older stuff?
