1. It's 17 days until Chrismas. How do you feel about that?

Okay, other than "Where's the damn brake pedal?", that sense that time is flying out of control, but that's not specific to the Christmas season. I have had a lot of friends who detest Christmas -- most often people who are not close to their families and associate it with a lot of fake cameraderie and fake cheer, but also several who just get tired of the tinsel and commercial "buy buy buy" stuff and the blow-up lawn dolls and all that. I don't, though. I actually like the dark (as long as it doesn't stay this way), the fireplace, the prettier of the Christmas lights, christmas carols (especially choral stuff), seasonal food. And things with my family weren't perfect but they were never awful and I mostly associate it with warmth and joy.

2. It's the second night of Hanukkah. How do you feel about that?

I don't have an emotional attachment to Hanukkah. I spend early childhood in a place so underpopulated with Jewish people that I grew up thinking of them like pilgrims and Indians: folks you read about in stories but who you didn't encounter in modern life. Later, the Jewish friends I had treated Hanukkah as a minor holiday that was polished and promoted simply because it was nearby to Christmas. The real Jewish holidays, to them, were Yom Kippur and Pesach.

3. It's Howie Hawkins's birthday. Have you wished him a happy birthday yet?

No, I don't tend to wish casual acquaintances and colleagues happy birthday. It doesn't do much for me to get a blast of 'happy birthday' wishes on Facebook and I don't need to be sung to by the folks I work with. So I don't tend to do it to others who aren't in my personal orbit.

4. John Lennon died on this date in 1980. Your reaction?

It was a year of huge changes overall for me, many of them ominous and disturbing, and this was one of those. I wasn't a major Beatles fan, mostly because I didn't get into rock and pop until 1975, so despite being a late baby boomer, they were 'before my time', music that by the time I was listening to them on occasion they were already out of business.

5. Beethoven's 7th Symphony premiered in Vienna with Beethoven conducting, on this day in 1813. Can you hum any part of the 7th?,

Yes, all four movements, although it always takes me awhile to conjure up the melody of the 3rd movement. For me it's the one that falls through the cracks a bit.
