1. Where did you go the last time you took an airplane ride?
Detroit to LaGuardia, returning home from visiting my boyfriend

2. Are you a nervous flyer or a comfortable flyer?
I'm a pretty comfortable flyer. The only thing I really get nervous about is getting to the airport on time, but I always end up arriving about an hour earlier than I need to!

3. Window seat or aisle seat?
Window please

4. What is the worst experience you've had flying?
When I went to Montana in 2010, the last leg of my flight went through a huge thunderstorm. We had about two hours of turbulence, and when the plane landed safely everyone clapped.

5. What is the best experience you've had flying?
Flying home from Amsterdam with KLM Airlines. 7 hour flight had 2 meals and 3 snacks. That was almost 20 years ago though, so things have probably changed.

1. Where did you go the last time you took an airplane ride?
My husband and I flew to New York and then Rome and back in October.

2. Are you a nervous flyer or a comfortable flyer?
I am a pretty comfortable flyer, although I can get motion sickness, so always have ginger at the ready.

3. Window seat or aisle seat?
Aisle, due to the motion sickness.

4. What is the worst experience you've had flying?
I took a red eye back from Hawaii to San Francisco one time and I was just miserable. Could not get comfortable or sleep. Red eyes are not for me (although I do ok going to Europe.)

5. What is the best experience you've had flying?
On our first trip to Paris, the flight crew were really friendly and liked us enough to give us a full bottle of champagne to take with us.

I don't normally do [community profile] thefridayfive, but I was inspired by [personal profile] redbird:

  1. Where did you go the last time you took an airplane ride?

Helsinki for Worldcon 75 via Singapore for a friend's wedding. There were a large number of sidetrips as I was away for a couple of months, but those were the key destinations.

  2. Are you a nervous flyer or a comfortable flyer?

Comfortable. I prefer light turbulence as it rocks me to sleep.

My first air trip was Newark to Taipei Songshan via LAX, Honolulu, and Tokyo Haneda at age 5. That five-year-old is sure that the way planes work is by extending the landing gear. Turbulence happens because the wheels are going over mountains or undersea ridges. I'm pretty sure that five-year-old's belief goes at least some small way in helping me be very calm about flights. That this doesn't make any sense to my adult mind doesn't seem to shake my inner kindergartener in the least.

  3. Window seat or aisle seat?

Window for flights of about two hours or less, aisle for anything longer. Ideally both, but those seats tend to be either on very small aircraft or business/first class on larger aircraft.

  4. What is the worst experience you've had flying?

Truthfully nothing really bad comes to mind. I think most of my bad experiences have been at the airport rather than in the air. For example, couple of years ago I had an annoying interaction with airport security leaving Kathmandu over some ₹1000 notes I was carrying out of Nepal. After a bit of discussion with a supervisor they finally let me go without confiscating the money. As we were finishing up I wished the officer a Happy Nepali New Year and got a big smile.

The other recent experience that I suppose might not have turned out well was flying into Bangkok Don Mueang a couple of years ago in the midst of a tropical downpour. Visibility went to zero on final approach and the pilot chose to go around. At the time I thought this was great because we just had passed a golden-roofed wat I failed to get a good aerial photo of and I figured this way I'd get another chance. Our circle around the airport took us over it again and on the second pass I got my shot.

As we came around for another attempt the pilot got on the PA and explained he'd aborted the landing because he couldn't see the runway. This is in fact is what he's supposed to do, but some airlines are more supportive of pilot initiative than others.

I thanked the flight crew on exit as I always do when I see them.

  5. What is the best experience you've had flying?

Apart from that first trip when I was five during which I got to visit the flight deck and meet the crew--back then people loved kids on aircraft, or so it seemed to me at the time--probably the most memorable experience was some years ago flying on Independence Day from Tweed-New Haven to Philadelphia. I looked down somewhere over New Jersey and saw what looked like dandelions blooming at high speed. It took a second for me to realize they were fireworks, seen from above. Town after town were firing off displays for July 4th. A great sight I'd love to see again.
